We Asked a Vet How to Pick the Best Dog Food. Here’s What He Said…

We love our pups like family…because they are. But walk down the pet food aisle and it’s easy to feel like you need a PhD in nutrition to make the “right” choice. What actually matters when it comes to your dog’s health?

To find out, we went straight to the source: Dr. Matthew Wheaton, D.V.M., chief of staff at Alicia Pet Care Center, second-generation veterinarian, and all-around dog lover. We asked him what he looks for in a food brand, and which one he often sends his furry patients home with. Here’s what he told us…

1. Quality Ingredients Matter

“The first consideration [when choosing a dog food] should always be the quality of the ingredients,” says Dr. Wheaton. “For me, human-grade ingredients are at the top of the list because they provide superior nutrition, digestibility, and safety.”

If it’s not good enough for you, it’s not good enough for your pup. That’s why ingredient lists should read like real food, not a science experiment.

2. Fresh Food > Overprocessed

Sure, kibble is easy. But Dr. Wheaton warns that high cooking temperatures strip away nutrients your dog needs. “While kibble offers convenience and affordability, it comes with potential deficits and negative health consequences,” he explains.

Think about it like this: a fresh, home-cooked meal is worlds better than an overcooked, fast-food dinner. Same goes for your dog’s bowl.

3. Dogs Deserve Real Protein

Your dog’s inner wolf is still in there – they’re preferential carnivores, after all. “Start with animal protein,” advises Dr. Wheaton. “Dogs thrive when their diets are centered around high-quality animal protein. Avoid foods high in corn or wheat, as they can cause significant inflammation.”

Why Ollie Gets the Vet’s Stamp of Approval

When Dr. Wheaton recommends a fresh food option, Ollie is often at the top of his list. “Their diets are made with high-quality, human-grade ingredients, cooked at low temperatures, and flash-frozen to preserve nutrient integrity. Additionally, Ollie’s food is highly palatable, even for the pickiest eaters.”

Plus, they never stop improving. “Ollie’s diets are developed with the guidance of a veterinary nutritionist who continuously evaluates emerging research in the field of veterinary nutrition,” he adds.

The Healthy-Dog Glow-Up

Dr. Wheaton’s seen the transformation firsthand. “The majority of my patients transitioning to Ollie report happier dogs at mealtime, better weight management, improved coat quality, reduced itchiness, and more consistent stools,” he says.

Better food, better health, better zoomies. We’re sold.

What’s a Rich Text element?

The rich text element allows you to create and format headings, paragraphs, blockquotes, images, and video all in one place instead of having to add and format them individually. Just double-click and easily create content.

Static and dynamic content editing

Static and dynamic content editing

A rich text element can be used with static or dynamic content. For static content, just drop it into any page and begin editing. For dynamic content, add a rich text field to any collection and then connect a rich text element to that field in the settings panel. Voila!

How to customize formatting for each rich text

Headings, paragraphs, blockquotes, figures, images, and figure captions can all be styled after a class is added to the rich text element using the "When inside of" nested selector system.
