All the questions you should ask before boarding your dog

We love a vacation. Change of scenery, time with loved ones, and a new adventure or two? Sign us up! But... it's hard when our dogs can't always come along. (I feel like I'm losing my mind if I spend more than a few days apart from my heeler.)

The reality is that sometimes travel is inevitable — whether for work, pleasure, or family obligations — and we need to know our pets are taken care of in our absence.

Here are some questions to ask any boarding facility before trusting them with your pup. Saying goodbye still won't be easy, but you'll be able to relax at least a little knowing they're in good hands. (We ask similar questions before sending our dogs to daycare!)

The bare bones: basic information

These questions probably go without saying — we know you're on top of it! — but it's always good to double check the details from the get go.

General boarding facility policies

  1. What are your facility's hours and drop-off/pick-up times?
  2. How long has your facility been in operation?
  3. What is your cancellation policy?
  4. How do you handle lost or damaged items?

Health and sanitation

  1. What vaccinations are required for dogs staying at your facility?
  2. How is your facility cleaned and disinfected, and how often?
  3. What is your procedure in case of a medical emergency?
  4. Are there any other rules or guidelines I should be aware of before boarding my dog with you?

What is the staff to dog ratio at your facility? What training does your staff have?

The more staff members on site, the better they'll be able to supervise your pup — and spend quality time with them. Experienced and trained dog daycare workers know how to handle various situations to ensure everybody's safety!

  1. What is the staff-to-dog ratio?
  2. How is dog behavior monitored and managed?
  3. Are the staff members trained in pet first aid and CPR?
  4. What training methods do you use with dogs?

What’s a Rich Text element?

The rich text element allows you to create and format headings, paragraphs, blockquotes, images, and video all in one place instead of having to add and format them individually. Just double-click and easily create content.

Static and dynamic content editing

Static and dynamic content editing

A rich text element can be used with static or dynamic content. For static content, just drop it into any page and begin editing. For dynamic content, add a rich text field to any collection and then connect a rich text element to that field in the settings panel. Voila!

How to customize formatting for each rich text

Headings, paragraphs, blockquotes, figures, images, and figure captions can all be styled after a class is added to the rich text element using the "When inside of" nested selector system.

Will my dog interact with other dogs?

Some dogs are social butterflies. Others aren't. And they all deserve to feel safe, comfortable, and fulfilled while you're away! Make sure you and your boarding facility are on the same page about interactions between pets.

  1. Is there an assessment process to ensure compatibility with other dogs?
  2. How do you handle behavioral issues or conflicts between dogs?
  3. What other options are there if my dog doesn't want to join group play time?
  4. If my dog is reactive or fearful, what management practices are in place to help them feel safe?

What will my dog's environment be like?

Understanding the accommodations available can help ensure a comfortable stay for your pet. Lots of indoor and outdoor space can reduces stress — and encourage your pup to play more while you're gone.

  1. Where will my dog sleep?
  2. Are there indoor and outdoor spaces for dogs to exercise and play?
  3. How often will my dog get a chance to use the bathroom outside?
  4. How much time will my dog spend alone versus with a staff member or other dogs?
  5. Do you have staff members stay at the facility overnight with the dogs?

How can I communicate with your team?

We don't want to be glued to our phones or computers — but we do want to know that we can get updates on our four-legged family members throughout their stay. Open communication can ease your concerns about having to leave your pup behind.

  1. How do you communicate with pet parents during their dog's stay?
  2. Are there webcam options to watch my dog while I'm away?
  3. How long will it usually take you to get back to me?
